Welcome to the McIntosh Cottage Rental web site.
This unique cottage is situated on Salerno Lake in the beautiful
Haliburton Highlands area, about 40 minutes north of Peterborough. The cottage is a
spacious 3-level building
with a
bunkie/
games room.
With 3 bedrooms and a loft in the
main building,
and double bunk-beds in the bunkie, the cottage has ample room for any large family.
Main Level
The main living area centres around a large
circular fireplace,
open from all sides, giving it a warm cozy feel on cool evenings. For rainy days, it comes equipped with
movies, board games, books, and puzzles
for all ages. You enter the cottage through a
mud room
just off the kitchen. The
kitchen
is
fully equipped
and spacious, sporting an island for ease of food preparation. This island
separates the kitchen from the dining area.
The
dining area
seats 10 comfortably at a beautiful hand crafted pine table, and is equipped with a booster
chair for the youngsters. Off the living room is a delightful
screened in porch
furnished with couch, chairs & table for your outside but inside
seating pleasure. This screened in porch exits onto the
wrap around deck,
where there are more seating possibilities with a lakeside view. A large
propane BBQ
is found on the deck towards the
kitchen/mud
room entrance. Also on this main level is the
3 piece bathroom
and a master bedroom. The master bedroom is furnished with a
queen bed
(with a firm mattress), and has an
en-suite entrance
to the bathroom. From the main floor, a
unique circular staircase
adds to the character of this cozy
cottage as it leads upwards to a loft or downwards to the lower common
area and bedrooms.
Loft
The top floor is a
loft
equipped with toys for all ages and a queen futon bed. This location
allows you to hear the kids playing while you are preparing meals. The loft also sports
skylights
making this an excellent place for star gazing.
This picturesque lake front
property
is
close to the water
and is
flat
once at the lake. Small children will have
hours of enjoyment playing on the safe sandy beach with
gradual entry
or in the water's edge
sandbox,
which is equipped with sand toys. The
swing set
will also keep the little ones busy. For the older
children, there is a
slide on the dock,
great swimming
off the dock, and a stable
canoe and paddle boat.
Salerno lake has great fishing, so for your fishing pleasure we have supplied you with a
row boat
and local motor rental information is available. Parents will have no trouble
watching their kids from the substantial dock with sitting area. For
your enjoyment of refreshments on the dock on those hot summer days, there is
a fridge located in the water's edge shed.
Down at the lake, there is a large
fire pit
for roasting marshmallows and campfire sing alongs.
For your outside eating pleasure, there is a
picnic area
located near the main entrance to the cottage. This area is equipped with
a picnic table and a lovely
outside fireplace.
Local Attractions
Kinmount Movie Theatre - This movie
theatre is truly astounding. When we started going, it was small and unknown -
not any longer. The owner has been collecting antique movie theatre
paraphernalia for years and has a small museum within the theatre.
Petroglyps Provincial Park - "Deep within a forest
northeast of Peterborough is the largest known concentration of aboriginal
rock carvings in Canada. Carved into the white marble rock face hundreds of
years ago, the 900 petroglyphs depict turtles, snakes, birds, humans and other
images. Hiking trails meander through surrounding forests, wetlands and rocky
ridges."
Local Art Galleries, including the famous David McIntosh Studios. Well, OK, he's not yet world famous,
but he and his wife have the exact same
names as your hosts, which makes for some confusing situations. And his art is
great, but go see for yourself - afterall, beauty is in the eye of the
beholder. (And no, we're not related.)
Roberts Marina in Haliburton - This marina is the ONLY marina we have found that will rent you
just a motor for the aluminium boat at the cottage. They are friendly (unlike some other local marinas!) and will even deliver a motor to the cottage.
Haliburton Forest - Haliburton Forest
and Wild Life Reserve Ltd. is a privately owned forest in Central Ontario's
Haliburton Highlands. Comprising over 50,000 acres of rolling hardwood
forests, pristine lakes, meandering rivers and extensive wetlands, make it a
nature enthusiasts dream. They also have a wonderful late-evening "star gazing" seminar. It is conducted by a very
knowledgeable amateur astronomer, and you get to look through some high-quality telescopes.
Haliburton Highlands Museum - The
museum is situated in Glebe Park on the north shore of Head Lake overlooking
Haliburton Village. It was started by a local committee as a Canadian
Centennial project to commemorate the early pioneers of the area.
Bancroft - Once the "Mineral Capital of
Canada", Bancroft has many old mineral mines. It is still possible to get a tour of some of the mineral quarries and go prospecting for minerals.
Peterborough Lift Locks A set of locks on the Trent Severn waterway which go up and down via massive hydrolic lifts. There's even a song about these - the "Lift-Lock Bop" - we leave the rest to your imagination...
