YOU ASKED US:
----------------------------------
Question:
Sarah Andrews of Victoria, British Columbia asks:
Is there a way to split up my .inv files (the files that contain copies of invoices created in TimeWise) by year? Is it possible to have TimeWise look to other directories for the invoices?  I have about 5000+ invoice files now resting in one directory.

Answer:
TimeWise only looks in the Invoice folder for the .inv files. However, it will not cause any problem for TimeWise if you move or delete old invoice files: they just won't be there for TimeWise to access should you try to use the View command to look at one. You can use a compression program, such as using PKZIP (included with TimeWise for Windows), WinZip or Stuffit to store invoices and proposals (all files that end with .inv or .est) that are not likely to be viewed again in one large file. Should you ever need to see one, you can simply uncompress the one you need: the files are named by their job/invoice number. For instance, for job 2000, you would need uncompress file 00002000.inv only. We like to move all invoices from a specific year into a single .zip or
.sit file (e.g. 1995inv.zip). Since the invoices are simply plain text files you can even use a search program (such as the shareware program called Searcher or PKZFIND) that can search inside compressed files if you ever need to search all invoices for a specific piece of information.

TECHNICAL TIP: LABELS THE WAY YOU WANT THEM
--------------------------------
Did you know that, with a little bit of technical knowledge, you can change the format of the labels that TimeWise generates? For instance, one customer recently wanted to put new labels on all her client file folders
and asked us if the Clients: Mailing Labels command could generate appropriate labels.
We made a backup of the files that contain the existing client label format for laser printers (clientl.lbx and clientl.lbt) and then opened up the file in TimeTool™ using the MODIFY LABEL CLIENTL command. It was then easy to modify the label format to display the Client ID in very large letters, the client name in fairly large letters, and remove all the address information.  The client then temporarily replaced the current clientl.lbx and clientl.lbt files with the new ones, and printed all the labels she needed.  Using this approach, there is no limit to how many label formats (or
envelope formats) you can generate. By the way, if you'd like to use the file folder label format we created, you can get a copy from our FTP site at ftp://ftp.timewise.net/pub/labelfil.zip
